About the Artist

Teresa Dowd was born in Ceduna in South Australia in 1951. She left school early and returned in her mid twenties and became a school teacher. She then worked in education, equal opportunity and publishing and raised three children. She found a creative outlet in drawing, creating assemblages and painting. In 1997 she attended RMIT to complete a diploma in Visual Art. Since then she has worked and exhibited as a practising artist, involved in both group and solo exhibitions.

Teresa usually makes work in series, taking up a set of ideas and sequentially developing and exploring a concept. Her work is based on her personal and professional meditations on the relationship between the visible and the metaphysical worlds, between the self and the surrounding natural forces. Throughout her practice her iconography has often come from a woman's realm of experience and childhood memory. It has included landscape, religious imagery, sewing paraphernalia, childhood photographs, domestic interiors and childhood toys. Although serious about her work, her idea of making art is quite closely associated with play; a game of improvisation and indefinite rules.
